Description
This course focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary to perform clinical competencies as a medical assistant. Clinical competencies in medical assisting include interviewing patients, compiling medical histories, obtaining and documenting vital signs, and recognizing when a healthcare provider must be notified of a potential or apparent medical concern. Emphasis is placed on administering medications under the direction of a supervising physician/healthcare provider. Content also includes assisting with general and specialty examinations, assisting with pediatric and geriatric patients, collecting and processing lab specimens, and educating patients regarding disease processes, medications, diagnostic procedures, and nutrition considerations. Attention is given to the general principles of physical therapy, cryotherapy, and thermotherapy. Instruction covers performing sterile procedures, administering first aid, and conducting electrocardiograms (ECGs). The course includes discussion of cultural diversity and stresses the importance maintaining compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
